As part of the literature festival “Hamburg reads the Elbe”, I illustrated a true story from 1921. Back then, a killer whale got lost in the Elbe during a heavy storm. It swam up the river inland and was eventually killed by the inhabitants of a small village. It was later put on display in a Hamburg ballroom. This story tells us a lot about how our relationship with wild nature has changed.
